The North Port could nearly be the picture-postcard Port Melbourne pub. It's well maintained, and has that comfortable locals atmosphere, the mixed clientele and the constant program of things going on.

Renamed in 2019 for the North Port Oval, it is still an iconic local, with the bar right in the centre of a relatively large square room, and a few other distinct areas.

Firstly, it's a dining pub, and a classy dining area is popular with not only the daytime business lunches, but also the evening diners. Food is highly rated, and special locals nights where things fly out at half price are also extremely popular.

A general seating area, and upmarket bar area make up another space.

Our tip: get down here early in the week to combine with the dinner specials. Remember, the food is good.

They say that pubs define the populace of the "Burrough" (Port Melbourne and surrounding districts) and the populace defines the pubs. A perfect example of this is the Albion Hotel, like the suburb, comes with wealth of colourful history, and like the suburb has reinvented itself as an inner-city dispenser of great fare and pleasant surroundings without losing its primary function as public house, where you might drop in benefit from what pubs do - offer a welcoming drink and a friendly chat - should you desire.

The pub has been recently renovated in reflecting its Victorian-era grandeur with lots of cherry wood fittings, fireplaces, large picture windows, couches and white table clothes balanced with the mandatory pool tables and public bar.

The secret of the Albion is the food. In a business where the competition is brisk the Albion was selected as one of the best 3 food pubs in Melbourne. Chef Craig McVean and staff cook French influenced dishes and strive for excellence at reasonable pub prices. e.g. New York cut of Agentinian Beef, 3 week hung and cooked to perfection, $28 (ah, this combined with a bottle of Robbie Burns red - heaven!!)

The ethos of the pub could be summed up by my recent casual banter with some of my fellow bar flies; on one side of me I had a person that had an "apartment" and a "partner" on the other side my chat companion had a "flat" and a "missus" and we all managed to have a splendid time. You could always get a good deal at the Albion: in the old days you may have picked up a "tropical" coloured telly or video, nowadays you get excellent food, company and surroundings.
