Partystar Review

One of the largest pubs in the area, the Hawthorn is dimly lit and features heavily with the under 25s crowd. Several rooms and bars are decked out in beer signs and video games, and of course a dedicated pool room is included as well.

A bistro is off on the one side and does a chicken parmagiana that has built up legendary status around Hawthorn.

Get here early, as there's nearly always some amount of queuing out the front.

Outdoor Area / Beer Garden

A colossal multi-levelled beer garden is loved by all, even in the colder months due to the well set-up heaters. A large screen is set up out here, too.

Live Music Venue

A band or DJ play most nights of the week.

This moderately sized pub has an undeniable atmosphere, there's always a decent crowd, the people are here for a good time and at the Hawthorn it's pretty much guaranteed. Although finishing at 1am is the only thing that is any put off at all!

Since the Governor Hotham has had plastic surgery and morphed into what's now known as 'The Hawthorn', it is safe to say the atmosphere has somewhat changed. The once-fairly-shabby divier of local drinking holes has upgraded and slipped into a more swanky attire, leaving even regulars of the old pub wondering, 'what WAS that building before again?'.

If you like good old commercial rock, moderately talented bands, large television screens and a comfy outdoor heated-in-winter area, you'll be happy here. The loungy-type atmosphere makes a good night of socialisation, and the beer is always flowing from the bar that's visible as soon as you walk in! (thank goodness you say!) Beware of the line that can sometimes clog up the street though, and also be aware that on Thursday nights this place is usually filled with fresh out of school students.

The Hawthorn contains all the usual features of a pub, with beer garden, pool tables, a couple of bars serving plenty of beers as well as mixed spirits champagne or even some fancier drinks. Drinks are all average pub prices. Meals are served every night with some great specials such as the chicken parma and a pot for $10 which goes down a treat.

Thursday and Saturday nights attract a much larger crowd, mainly 18-25s, probably due to the live bands on stage. The bands' sets are mixed with mostly top 40 DJ hits throughout the night.

Sunday or Monday nights are pretty quiet and great to just chill with a beer and a few friends.

The split level beer garden is very popular, and often hard to find a seat on warmer nights, but still worth it to stand and chat. On colder nights, gas heaters make the garden even more enjoyable.

Functions are sometimes held in one section of the pub, so one bar is closed off, making the main bar even busier.

Dress is relatively casual although still neat.
